About this wine

Character

Clarity is the guiding principle of this Chardonnay. Pale golden yellow in the glass, with preserved lemon, green pears and shell on the nose, along with a touch of broom flower, a slightly waxy note, dry foliage, and freshly shelled hazelnuts and almonds.

Terroir and origin

The climat En Chatenay lies at 250 metres altitude below the Roche de Vergisson, facing northeast. The parcel covers 0.69 hectares, with reddish-brown clay over limestone carrying 55-year-old vines. Domaine La Soufrandière in Vinzelles has been run by Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret since 2000, joined by Marc-Antoine in 2010.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 25 September 2021. Whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation, followed by 17 months of ageing, first in used barrels, then in neutral tanks after blending. Malolactic fermentation ran to completion. Sulphur was added lightly and only before bottling: 27 mg/l total sulphur at a pH of 3.16.

On the palate

Mouth-watering from the very first sip, with lemon, lime and salt, chalky and iodine notes, green herbs and lemongrass. The wine fills the palate with a bright, crystalline aromatic profile, tightens on the finish, feels vibrantly mineral and stays juicy through the long finale.

Food pairings

Langoustines "en buisson" with young garlic, lemongrass and lime, red mullet with yellow Thai curry, coconut milk and kaffir lime leaves, or courgette risotto with almond-lemon persillade.

Special features

La Soufrandière farms 12 hectares biodynamically: organically certified by Ecocert since 2003, with the Demeter seal since 2006, which also appears on the label. Part of the vineyards is worked with horses to avoid compacting the soil. The wine is bottled unfiltered with minimal sulphur.
