About this wine
Character
A bright, juicy Chardonnay of great clarity. It offers aromas of lemon curd pastry, preserved lemons and green and yellow pears, joined by lanolin, a faintly smoky note and a few gently toasted hazelnuts. Ripe, fresh, juicy.
Terroir and origin
The En Chatenay climat lies below the Roche de Vergisson at 250 metres of altitude, facing north-east. The Bret brothers farm 0.69 hectares of reddish-brown clay over limestone there, with vines that are 55 years old. Their estate in Vinzelles dates back to Jules Bret, who acquired one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père in 1947; since 2000, Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have run the estate, joined by Marc-Antoine in 2010.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 2 September 2022, pressed as whole clusters and fermented spontaneously. Ageing lasted 17 months, first in used barrels, then in neutral tanks after blending. Malolactic fermentation ran to completion. Only a light dose of sulphur was added before bottling: 21 mg/l total sulphur, pH 3.17.
On the palate
Juicy, bright and vibrant. Lively acidity carries tart, zesty citrus notes and a touch of salt, the interplay proving distinctly mouth-watering. A pure expression of Pouilly-Fuissé without pretension.
Food pairing
Roasted golden beetroot with pears and pistachios, langoustines "en buisson" with young garlic, lemongrass and lime or grilled oysters with hot sauce butter.
Special features
La Soufrandière has been Ecocert-certified organic since 2003 and Demeter-certified since 2006, with the logo shown on the label. Part of the vineyards is worked with horses to keep soil compaction to a minimum. The magnum holds 1500 ml, and the wine has 13.0% ABV.
