About this wine

Character

The Pouilly-Fuissé En Chatenay Zen is a pale, juicy Chardonnay from the southern Mâconnais, held together by an agile acidity and a saline edge. Ripe and fresh at once, crystal clear in its aromas, without pretence.

Terroir and origin

The En Chatenay climat lies below the Roche de Vergisson at 250 metres above sea level, facing north-east. La Soufrandière farms 0.69 hectares there on reddish-brown clay over limestone, with vines that are 55 years old. The domaine is based in Vinzelles and farms 12 hectares in total.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 2 September 2022. Whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation, followed by 17 months' ageing: first in used barrels, then in neutral tanks after blending. Malolactic fermentation ran to completion. Sulphur was added only lightly, just before bottling; total sulphur is 21 mg/l, pH 3.17. 13.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

On the nose, pastry with lemon curd, salted lemons, green and yellow pears, along with lanolin, a light smoky note and lightly toasted hazelnuts. The palate entry is juicy and bright, the agile acidity carrying tart zesty and lemony notes along with a touch of salinity that sets the mouth watering.

Food pairings

Langoustines "en buisson" with young garlic, lemongrass and lime, grilled oysters with hot sauce butter or roasted yellow beetroot with pears and pistachios.

Distinctive features

The Bret brothers have farmed organically, Ecocert-certified, since 2003 and biodynamically, Demeter-certified, since 2006; the Demeter logo appears on the label. Part of the vineyards is worked with horses to avoid compacting the soil.
