About this wine

Character

A Chardonnay that holds freshness and substance at once: bright citrus fruit and acidity on one side, yeasty creaminess and salty depth on the other. The Les Longeays site has a reputation for yielding balanced, long-lived wines, and this vintage already shows that balance on the nose.

Terroir and origin

The Bret brothers own 0.54 hectares in the Climat Les Longeays. The plot sits at 210 metres of altitude, facing south-southeast, right next to Les Quarts, on partly iron-rich clay and limestone soil from the Bajocian. The 38-year-old Chardonnay vines grow in a vineyard farmed biodynamically by Jean-Philippe, Jean-Guillaume and Marc-Antoine Bret; to protect the soil, the estate works partly with horses.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 22 September 2021. Whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation, then 17 months of ageing: eleven months in pièces, followed by foudres, with malolactic fermentation running to completion. Total sulphur sits, depending on the barrel, at 34 mg/l, with a pH of 3.16.

On the palate

The wine is at once vigorous and clearly defined. Ripe yellow plum and white-fleshed peach meet jasmine, tree bark, foliage and stone. A fine tannin sets up resistance against the fruit, the texture stays finely grained through to the finish, which closes on distinct salinity and very good length.

Food pairings

Lemon chicken in kaffir lime and coconut cream, pear and ricotta ravioli with brown butter cream, or fish parmentier with cod, cauliflower, almonds and chickpeas.

Special features

La Soufrandière has been Ecocert-certified organic since 2003 and has carried the Demeter seal, also shown on the label, since 2006. In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum: native yeasts, used oak barrels, unfiltered bottling.
