About this wine
Character
A Chardonnay full of energy and vitality that vibrates on the nose already: lemon, mandarin and lime, alongside stone and lichen, green and yellow plum. Vinified dry at 14.0% vol., yet bright and nimble.
Terroir and origin
The Bret brothers own 0.54 hectares in the Les Longeays climat, located at 210 metres altitude with a south-southeast exposure, directly next to Les Quarts. The soil consists partly of iron-rich clay and limestone from the Jura's Bajocian period. This site produces long-lived, balanced wines.
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay from 38-year-old vines, hand-harvested on 27 August 2022. Whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation, followed by 17 months of ageing: eleven months in pièces, then in foudres, with full malolactic fermentation. The pH is 3.15, total sulphur around 32 mg/l depending on the barrel. Bottled unfiltered.
On the palate
Juicy and bright, with crisp white-fleshed fruit and again citrus fruit. Joined by a touch of warm puff pastry, fine tannin and a brilliant, assertive, ripe acidity that draws an arc of tension through to the long, saline finish.
Food pairings
With grilled corn on the cob marinated in butter and honey, pear and ricotta ravioli with brown butter cream, or a shrimp burger with fries.
Special features
Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret took over La Soufrandière in 2000 and converted immediately: Ecocert organic certification since 2003, then Demeter for biodynamic viticulture since 2006. The Demeter logo appears on the label. Part of the vineyards is worked with horses to avoid soil compaction.
