About this wine
Character
Pale golden yellow in the glass. A dry Chardonnay at 13.5% vol. that is self-contained yet under tension: juicy fruit set against an acidity that builds pressure, with an austere edge carrying through to the finish.
Terroir and origin
Les Quarts is one of the finest terroirs of the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The vineyard faces southeast, the soil is siliceous and, above all, iron-rich clay and limestone from the Bajocian of the Jura. The Chardonnay vines are 48 to 80 years old, and the plots have been horse-ploughed since 2008.
Grape variety and winemaking
Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 26 and 27 August 2022. Whole-cluster pressing is followed by spontaneous fermentation, then 17 months of ageing: eleven months in barrels and foudres, followed by time in foudre, with complete malolactic fermentation. The pH is 3.18, total sulphur 29 mg/l.
On the palate
The nose opens with waxy notes, tart citrus and ripe stone fruit, alongside verbena, catmint, lemon curd pastry and a hint of toffee. On the palate, juicy, coating stone fruit and yellow pome fruit lead at first, before the citrus, zesty notes and acidity gain ground. The finish turns slightly saline, with caramel, tobacco and noticeable grip.
Food pairings
With monkfish cheek ceviche with leche de tigre, yuzu and celery, fennel risotto with red mullet fillets, or a fennel salad with orange, burrata, lemon-ginger oil and coriander seed.
Special features
La Soufrandière in Vinzelles is run by brothers Jean-Philippe, Jean-Guillaume and Marc-Antoine Bret. The estate has been Ecocert-certified organic since 2003 and Demeter-certified biodynamic since 2006. It is bottled unfiltered, here in the 1500ml Magnum.
