About this wine
Character
A quiet wine of great clarity. Deep golden yellow in the glass, with citrus and stone fruit on the nose, a saline note and a hint of verbena. Everything sits within the same structure, no single note pushes forward; calm and balance define the wine more than power.
Terroir and origin
The Les Quarts plot in Vinzelles covers around two hectares, south-east facing at roughly 230 metres. The soil is living Bajocian clay-limestone with silicate crystals. This is home to the estate's oldest vines, around 48 to 80 years old. La Soufrandière dates back to 1947, when Jules Bret acquired one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père; since 2000 the estate has been run by his grandsons Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret, joined by Marc-Antoine since 2010.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, biodynamically farmed, with traditional manual vineyard work and selective hand harvesting. Whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation, followed by 17 months on lees, partly in stainless steel tanks, partly in used barriques. The ZEN philosophy means fermentation and ageing without any added sulphur; only a minimal amount is added at the unfiltered bottling stage. 13.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
The palate continues seamlessly from the nose: creamy texture, carried by powdery-fine phenolics and ripe, vibrant acidity. Juicy and extract-rich, without heaviness, with a slightly tannic finish and a long, cool aftertaste.
Food pairings
Pan-fried pike-perch, chicken in lemon-thyme jus or risotto with white asparagus, as well as aged Comté and goat's cheese.
Special features
The Cuvée Millerandée comes from millerandage-affected, small-berried grapes. Organic certified by Ecocert since 2003, Demeter since 2006, part of the vineyards are worked with horses. The 1500 ml Magnum format gives the wine time to unfold.
