About this wine
Character
A Chardonnay in a cool key: citrus and herbs carry it, the acidity gives it drive, the long lees ageing lends its texture. Dry, 13.5% vol.
Terroir and origin
The Les Quarts climat is among the finest terroirs of the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The vineyard faces southeast, its Chardonnay vines are 48 to 80 years old and root in siliceous and, above all, iron-rich clay-limestone soil from the Bajocian of the Jura. The wines born here are long-lived and balanced.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 24 and 25 August 2020. Whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation, followed by 17 months of ageing: eleven months in pièces, then in large oak foudres. Malolactic fermentation ran to completion. Added sulphur amounts to 20 mg/l.
On the palate
The nose offers citrus notes, pencil shavings, stone and herbs, alongside celery stalk, verbena and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, the wine shows powerful and almost wiry acidity that provides drive and delivers an electrifying moment on the tongue. Remarkable, given that full malolactic fermentation lies behind it and 2020 was a moderate vintage; the fruit nonetheless stays juicy. The long lees ageing lays a fine silkiness over it and lends aromatic presence too.
Food pairings
Razor clam ceviche with ají limo and trout roe, nori maki yasai with mizuna salad, or freshly fried tofu with dashi and ginger.
Special features
Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret took over La Soufrandière in 2000 and converted the estate to biodynamic viticulture. The estate has held Ecocert organic certification since 2003, and since 2006 carries the Demeter seal, also shown on the label. Part of the vineyard work is done with horses to keep soil compaction low. Bottled in 1500 ml Magnum.
