About this wine
Character
Pale golden yellow in the glass. The nose holds together yellow-fleshed richness and cool nervosity: bright citrus aromatics, fine mineral spice, along with chamomile, almond blossom and a touch of pencil shavings.
Terroir and origin
Les Quarts is one of the finest terroirs in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The east-facing vineyard carries Chardonnay vines between 48 and 80 years old, on flinty and, above all, iron-rich clay and Jurassic limestone soil. Of the climat's 52 hectares, the Bret brothers own two, 1.5 hectares of which they work with a horse. The hillside site has been biodynamic-certified since 2006.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested between 18 and 23 September. Whole-bunch pressing was followed by spontaneous fermentation, then 17 months' ageing, initially in used barrels, then in neutral tanks after blending. Malolactic fermentation ran to completion. Sulphur was added only before bottling: 29 mg/l total sulphur, pH 3.22.
On the palate
Mineral and herbal spice within juicy fruit of citrus and yellow and green plums. The vintage's citric acidity lends drive and a light edge, while lemon zest sets a piquant bitterness against it. On the finish, the salty, gulpable component comes to the fore.
Food pairings
Lemon chicken with fennel, loup de mer cheeks with cauliflower-cardamom crème or crispy chicken salad with Thai basil, coriander and sesame oil.
Special features
La Soufrandière in Vinzelles traces back to Jules Bret, who acquired one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père in 1947. Since 2000 the estate has been run by his grandsons Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume, joined by Marc-Antoine in 2010. The label carries the Demeter seal. This bottle holds 1500 ml.
