About this wine
Character
The Zen cuvée shows the Les Quarts climat in its cool, linear form. Pale golden yellow in the glass, with tart citrus notes, verbena and mint on the nose, alongside a restrained waxy note and ripe stone fruit in the background.
Terroir and origin
Les Quarts is among the finest terroirs of the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The vineyard faces southeast, the Chardonnay vines are 48 to 80 years old, and the soil consists of flinty and above all iron-rich clay and Bajocian limestone. The plot has been horse-ploughed since 2008.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 26 and 27 August 2022. Whole-cluster pressing and spontaneous fermentation followed, then 17 months of ageing: eleven months in barrels and foudres, followed by foudres, with malolactic fermentation carried through completely. Total sulphur 34 mg/l, pH 3.18, 13.5% vol.
On the palate
Juicy, coating fruit of citrus, yellow pome fruit and stone fruit. The acidity builds pressure and tension, the finish turns salty and tart, with pure citrus fruit and a light tannin.
Food pairings
Oven-roasted chicken thighs, orange slices, fennel and anise, grilled bread with sardines, sweet onions and yellow tomatoes, or eggs stuffed with miso mayonnaise and Aleppo chili flakes.
Highlights
La Soufrandière traces back to Jules Bret, who acquired one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père in 1947. Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have run the estate since 2000, joined by Marc-Antoine Bret in 2010. The estate has been organically certified by Ecocert since 2003 and biodynamically certified by Demeter since 2006, with the Demeter logo appearing on the label. This magnum holds 1500 ml.
