About this wine

Character

An austere, spicy Chardonnay with real tension and drive. The Bret brothers' Zen bottling forgoes anything that would smooth a wine over, revealing every fibre of their vineyard work instead.

Terroir and origin

The Les Quarts parcel covers 0.69 hectares in Pouilly-Vinzelles, at roughly 250 metres of altitude, on soil of red clay and limestone. Domaine La Soufrandière in Vinzelles now farms 12 hectares; its nucleus was the one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père acquired by Jules Bret in 1947. Since Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret took over the estate in 2000, it has been farmed biodynamically, with parts of the vineyards worked by horse.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Chardonnay, whole-cluster pressed, fermented spontaneously and aged around 17 months on the lees. No sulphur is added during fermentation or ageing; the unfiltered bottling receives only a minimal dose of sulphur. 13.5% ABV, dry.

On the palate

Deep straw yellow with a subtle amber tinge. On the nose, mellow yellow apples and fully ripe pears with faintly oxidative touches, underscored by mace, light tobacco and acacia. The attack is gripping and powerful, firm tannins give it an austere edge, and the spicy side takes over as the fruit recedes. The ripe acidity operates nonchalantly in the background, carried by fine phenolics.

Food pairings

Pan-fried turbot in hazelnut cream, morel risotto, roasted pumpkin with sage, poultry liver terrine, Époisses or mature Comté.

Special features

Demeter logo on the label; certified organic by Ecocert since 2003, Demeter since 2006. The extremely low sulphur use means its evolution in the glass can be followed in real time.
