About this wine
Character
A Lagrein built on tension rather than fullness. Silky tannin carries it, while violets and wet slate define the nose. At 12.5% vol., it stays light on its feet.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on steep sites above Bolzano, on the Kohlerer Berg and on the Ritten. The sites face northwest, are shaded by forest and swept by cool downdraft winds, keeping the nights cool. The volcanic soils consist of porphyry, basalt and granite. Martin Gojer has preserved the traditional pergola training here: it shades the soil, protects against dehydration and allows ripening without overripening.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Lagrein. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with wild yeasts, followed by aging in concrete tanks and used oak or chestnut wood barrels. There is no fining or filtration; only a minimal dose of sulfur is added before bottling. The estate's wines often age two to three years on the full lees.
On the palate
Dry and clearly defined: dark berries and violets, alongside silky tannin and a vein of acidity that keeps the wine in motion. Liveliness and drinkability take precedence over concentration.
Special features
The estate has farmed nearly four hectares biodynamically since 2009. Martin Gojer makes the preparations himself and forgoes synthetic crop protection and artificial fertilizer entirely. The eight Ouessant miniature sheep, the world's smallest sheep breed, are Marion's domain: they graze the undervine area of the narrow pergola rows, replacing chemical weed control. Chickens, bees and cats complete the picture. On the narrow terraces, much of the work is still done by hand, as machines have no place there.
