About this wine

Character

The Ried Trinkaus Sauvignon Blanc DAC 2021 is a dry white wine from Southern Styria that lets structure take the lead over fruit. In the glass, pale straw yellow with very faint green highlights. The nose stays young and reserved and needs plenty of air: smoky, dark, wet stone on one side, pale blossoms and cassis on the other, plus herbs, a hint of pea pod and Meyer lemon, gradually revealing yellow kiwi and yellow apple.

Terroir and origin

The Ried Trinkaus sits atop the roughly 500-metre-high ridge of the Kranachberg, an outward-curving, open south-facing slope. Warm thermal currents from the Kranach valley and rapid nighttime cooling ensure optimal air circulation. The name already appears on maps of the region dating back 200 years, referring to the especially easy-drinking, gentle wines of this site. Here the vines root in sparse limestone gravel and pebble soil.

Grape variety and vinification

Sauvignon Blanc from vines around 45 years old, hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented. Two years of ageing on lees in stainless steel, 1.1 g/l residual sugar with 6.5 g/l acidity, 13.5% vol.

On the palate

What the nose holds back, the palate delivers: juicy, textured, dense, fresh. Peach and apricot, star fruit and cape gooseberry, a touch of white currant, lime and grapefruit, plus almond and nut. The acidity tingles along the edges of the tongue, while the saline, chalky minerality lingers through the long finish.

Food pairing recommendations

With river fish such as char or trout, with sole in beurre blanc, with asparagus and hollandaise sauce and with Styrian fried chicken. A mature hard cheese also makes a strong match here.

Special features

Old vines, sparse soil and two years of lees contact give this historic site its taut, vibrant signature. The wine is still at the beginning of its development and rewards both air in the glass and time in the cellar. Organic-certified, AT-BIO-402.
