About this wine
Character
Calm yet highly taut: a dry Riesling with smoky spice, saline texture and a finish that lingers for a long time. Hans Oliver Spanier calls the parcel it comes from the "DNA of German Riesling".
Terroir and origin
The Rothenberg lies near Nackenheim on the Roter Hang, the steep slope between Nierstein and Nackenheim that Kühling-Gillot farms alongside Pettenthal, Hipping and Ölberg. The soil is weathered Rotliegend, which gives the wines here their smoky minerality. The grapes come from the "Kapellchen" plot.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling from vines planted in 1934 that remain ungrafted to this day, meaning without the usual American rootstock; they survived phylloxera. Since 2005 the estate has farmed biodynamically, using preparations 500 and 501 and following the rhythm of the lunar phases. In the cellar: spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents. 12.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
Dense and powerful, carried by saline freshness and a fine texture. Aromatically yellow apple and wet stone, with a smoky nuance. The finish lingers long and stays in motion.
Food pairings
With pan-fried turbot with beurre blanc, with veal sweetbreads or with a classically prepared Bresse chicken.
Special features
The Rothenberg GG "wurzelecht" was awarded 100 points by Gault & Millau in 2018 as Germany's best dry Riesling. Kühling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier run two VDP estates under a single biodynamic signature.
