About this wine

Character

A Riesling of cool stature and dense core. The smoky spice of the red sandstone sits beneath taut acidity, the two keeping the wine in constant tension. It needs air and time to reveal its depth.

Terroir and origin

The Ölberg belongs to the Roter Hang between Nierstein and Nackenheim, where Kühling-Gillot also farms the Pettenthal, Hipping and Rothenberg sites. Weathered red sandstone defines these steep slopes and gives the Rieslings their smoky minerality. The wine is bottled at the Carolin Spanier-Gillot estate in Bodenheim, Rheinhessen.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling, vinified dry, 12.5% ABV. Carolin Spanier-Gillot and Hans Oliver Spanier have farmed biodynamically since 2005: preparations 500 and 501 are used regularly, and lunar phases set the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, the wine ferments spontaneously in large wooden casks and steel tanks, with minimal sulphur and no fining at all.

On the palate

Taut and powerful, with ripe lemon and yellow apple, plus a fine herbal spice. The acidity leads, the extract carries, and the finish stays saline and mineral for a long time.

Food pairing recommendations

Pan-seared turbot with beurre blanc, wild salmon with fennel vegetables or duck breast with orange jus. Equally good with smoked trout and aged hard cheese.

Special features

Kühling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier run two VDP estates under one biodynamic philosophy: red sandstone on the Roter Hang, limestone in the Wonnegau. The cellar sees itself as a place of accompaniment, not correction.
