About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling that conveys its origin through structure rather than fruit. Acidity leads, fruit stays in the background, and length comes from salt and smoky stone. A wine with inner tension that rewards patience.

Terroir and origin

Pettenthal belongs to the Roter Hang between Nierstein and Nackenheim, where Kühling-Gillot also farms Hipping, Ölberg and Rothenberg. Weathered Rotliegend defines the wines of this steep slope with smoky minerality. The Grosses Gewächs wines from Pettenthal, Hipping and Rothenberg rank among the top tier of German Riesling.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. Carolin and Hans Oliver Spanier have run the VDP estate biodynamically since 2005: preparations 500 and 501 are applied regularly, and lunar phases set the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents. The cellar accompanies the wine, it doesn't correct it. Bottled at 12.5% Vol., dry.

On the palate

Impact from the very first moment: apricot and vineyard peach only linger briefly before smoky stone notes and a saline edge take over. The vibrant acidity keeps the wine lean, and the finish stays cool and long.

Special features

Kühling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier share a biodynamic signature: here the Rotliegend of the Roter Hang, there the limestone soils of the Wonnegau and the Zellertal. In Pettenthal, Hipping and Ölberg, Carolin and Hans Oliver Spanier share the slope with Kai Schätzel.
