About this wine
Character
A Riesling that is taut and dense at once. The acidity carries it, the weathered Rotliegend lends a smoky undertone, and the magnum format slows its development. Vinified dry, 12.5% vol., with the substance for many years in the cellar.
Terroir and origin
The Pettenthal vineyard belongs to the Roter Hang between Nierstein and Nackenheim, where Kühling-Gillot also works Hipping, Ölberg and Rothenberg. Weathered Rotliegend gives the wines of this steep site a smoky minerality.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. The estate has worked biodynamically since 2005: preparations 500 and 501 are used regularly, and lunar phases determine the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal sulphur use, no fining agents. The principle here is to accompany rather than correct.
On the palate
Lemon and white peach, alongside fine herbal notes. The body is taut and dense, the acidity pronounced, the finish long and saline-mineral.
Food pairings
Fine fish such as turbot and sole, veal saddle with a delicate sauce, along with aged hard cheese such as Comté.
Special features
1500-millilitre magnum, bottled by the Carolin Spanier-Gillot estate in Bodenheim. The Grosses Gewächs wines from Pettenthal, Hipping and Rothenberg rank among the finest German Rieslings.
