About this wine

Character

This Rosso di Montalcino puts its spice forward: juniper, star anise, clove and black pepper open the nose, beneath which lie plum, elderberry and blackberry. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate and cedarwood add depth, while rosemary, oregano and pine needles lend an ethereal note at the close.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from the Pian dell'Orino and Pian Bassolino vineyards, mainly from the middle section of these sites, at 360 to 500 metres above sea level. The soils consist predominantly of highly calcareous clay, weathered marl and grey-blue clay. The vines average 21 years of age.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Sangiovese, selected in the vineyard and again on sorting tables. Spontaneous fermentation peaked on day eight at 30 °C and lasted 18 days in total, followed by 15 days of maceration on the skins, during which malolactic fermentation also took place. The young wine matured for 32 months in a 50-hectolitre oak cask. 14.5% vol., dry.

On the palate

The first sip draws into a fine, narrow, polished line. The sour cherry gains noticeably in presence and acid bite, the spice appears more balanced than on the nose and gives the finish contour. The tannin is restrained yet ever-present, and the acid structure lends every sip a racy edge. The finish lingers long.

Food pairing suggestions

Wagyu flank steak with oven-roasted pointed cabbage, fettuccine with pumpkin, ricotta and wild boar ragù or braised rabbit leg with tomato, potato and fennel.

Special features

Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer have farmed their estate strictly biodynamically since 1997: pruning by the lunar calendar, plant-based preparations instead of chemical treatments, no oenological intervention in the cellar. They created their own geological maps for their sites. Their yield rule is: one vine, one bottle.
