About this wine

Character

The Saint-Véran Climat "La Bonnode" AOC 2022 from La Soufrandière is a dry Chardonnay from southern Burgundy that holds coolness and creaminess in balance. At 13.5% vol., it shows power and density, carried by an acidity that lends tension and precision to the sometimes hot and dry 2022 vintage.

Terroir and origin

The La Bonnode vineyard covers two hectares at 250 metres altitude, east-facing at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson. The 35-year-old vines stand largely amid old bush vines, and the soils of calcareous marl and pale clay are ideal for Chardonnay. La Soufrandière in Vinzelles farms 12 hectares, Ecocert-certified organic since 2003 and biodynamic under Demeter since 2006, with some plots worked by horse.

Grape variety and vinification

Harvest took place from 29 August to 3 September 2022. The whole clusters were pressed, the must fermented spontaneously, and the wine then aged for 17 months in foudres and 228-litre barrels, undergoing malolactic fermentation. Total sulphur content is 46 mg/l, pH 3.21.

On the palate

On the nose, lemon with juice, pips and peel, green pineapple, star fruit and greengage, with smoke, stone and nut notes behind. Then ripe citrus fruit and yellow stone fruit, carried by vitality, freshness and a salty streak that keeps the dense body lithe.

Food pairing recommendations

With smoked haddock brandade with lemon yoghurt, with butternut squash tartlets with goat's cheese, or with vegetable and mushroom gratin with seafood.

Special features

The label carries the Demeter logo. La Soufrandière traces back to Jules Bret, who acquired the first hectare in 1947; since 2000 the estate has been run by Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret, joined by Marc-Antoine Bret in 2010. Like all the estate's wines, it is bottled unfiltered with only minimal sulphur.
