About this wine

Character

A Chardonnay with a creamy texture and clear definition: the richness comes from the long ageing, the tension from an acidity and a saline edge that keep the finish dry.

Terroir and origin

La Bonnode lies at 250 metres above sea level at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson, facing east, and borders the La Combe Desroches vineyard. The two hectares carry 35-year-old vines, mostly surrounded by old vine stock. The soils of calcareous marl and pale clay are considered ideal for Chardonnay.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Chardonnay, harvested on 23 and 24 September 2021. The whole clusters were pressed and the must fermented spontaneously. The wine then aged for 17 months in large oak casks and in 228-litre pièces, undergoing malolactic fermentation. The pH is 3.19, total sulphur 24 mg/l.

On the palate

On the nose, lemon and orange, spring blossom and chalk, along with lemon curd and herbs. The palate stays bright and silky: lemon, a touch of pineapple and pear, a hint of tannin. The finish blends sour candy notes with ripe yellow fruit, drawing back into salinity and acidity.

Food pairings

With chicken marinated in fresh pineapple with coriander, rice vinegar and rice. Equally good with a green asparagus tart with fresh peas and mint or a vegetable and mushroom gratin with seafood.

Special features

La Soufrandière in Vinzelles is run by the brothers Jean-Philippe, Jean-Guillaume and Marc-Antoine Bret. Certified organic by Ecocert since 2003, the estate has carried the Demeter seal since 2006, also shown on the label. Part of the vineyards are worked with a horse. The Zen bottling stands for minimal sulphuring.
