About this wine

Character

Medium straw yellow. The nose is restrained and built on balance: bright fruit, a light creaminess, underpinned by a subtle chalkiness. Nothing pushes forward; the elegance of this Chardonnay lies in its finesse.

Terroir and origin

The plot in the La Bonnode climate covers two hectares, sits at 250 metres of altitude and faces east, below the Roche de Vergisson. The soil is clay over limestone, and the vines are 35 years old.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Chardonnay. Hand-harvested on 29 August and 3 September 2022. After whole-bunch pressing, the must fermented spontaneously, followed by 17 months of ageing: first in a concrete egg, then in neutral tanks after blending. A light dose of sulphur was added before bottling; total sulphur stands at 39 mg/l, with a pH of 3.28.

On the palate

Precise and balanced, with a pronounced creaminess and a finely polished texture imparted by the concrete egg. The acidity appears subtle at first, but carries strength and drive, sustaining a tension that runs through to the long finish, where it merges with a mouth-watering saltiness.

Food pairings

Roast chicken with preserved salted lemon, pan-seared salmon with pea pesto and roasted potatoes, or a Breton seafood platter.

Special features

Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have run La Soufrandière in Vinzelles since 2000, joined by their brother Marc-Antoine in 2010. The estate has been organically certified by Ecocert since 2003 and Demeter-certified since 2006; the Demeter logo appears on the label. Parts of the vineyards are worked with horses to minimise soil compaction.
