About this wine
Character
This Chardonnay is racy, citrus-driven and medium-bodied, with plenty of drive. In the glass, a deep, bright and clear straw yellow; on the nose, delicate and precise rather than lush. More a sprint than a marathon.
Terroir and origin
The Climat La Bonnode lies at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson. The plot covers around two hectares and faces east, with roughly 35-year-old vines rooted in limestone and clay soil. It is farmed biodynamically.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. The must fermented spontaneously in the 19-hl concrete egg, with no sulphur added during fermentation or ageing. After around a year in the egg and a brief period in stainless steel, only a minimal dose of sulphur was added before bottling unfiltered.
On the palate
First green mandarin, lemon zest and orange blossom, then with air wet chalk, crushed oyster shell and a saline note, underpinned by well-steeped herbal tea with a touch of chamomile. On the palate, brightly luminous acidity, fine phenolics, polished, powdery tannins, and an invigorating finish.
Food pairings
Oysters, scallop sashimi, pan-fried turbot or pike-perch on braised fennel, as well as mild goat's cheese.
Special features
La Soufrandière in Vinzelles has been family-owned since 1947, when Jules Bret acquired one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père. Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret took over in 2000 and converted the estate to organic viticulture. It has been Ecocert-certified since 2003 and Demeter-certified since 2006; the Demeter logo appears on the label.
