About this wine
Character
This Grüner Veltliner focuses on clarity rather than fullness. Yellow apple and lemon stand alongside cool herbal spice and a stony note, with the fruit remaining deliberately restrained. The profile is lean and upright; the wine appears architectural rather than adorned.
Terroir and Origin
The wine comes from the single vineyard Ried Krainer in Burgenland. Roland Velich embarked on his own path with Moric in 2001 and has since worked with a strict focus on individual sites; the estate encompasses 22.5 hectares of vineyards. His goal is cool elegance rather than opulence, and this philosophy applies just as much to the white variety as to the reds.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Grüner Veltliner. In the cellar, the winery practices radical restraint, and the vineyards are cultivated biodynamically so that the origin shines through unadulterated. The wine is dry with 13.0% ABV.
On the Palate
A taut opening, with acidity that carries through and stays linear. Complemented by subtle texture and fine phenolics that lend the wine grip. The finish is long and distinctly mineral-driven.
Food Pairings
Pan-fried char, pike-perch with lentils, a classic Wiener Schnitzel, or braised veal. Roasted root vegetables with herb oil and mature mountain cheese also pair wonderfully.
Special Features
Moric is primarily renowned for Blaufränkisch from old vines; a Grüner Veltliner is the exception in the portfolio. Roland Velich was named Falstaff Winemaker of the Year in 2023.
