About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir full of energy from southern Santenay, marked by juicy, ripe, at times already tender fruit and a precise framework. Thomas Morey deliberately holds back on oak use and lets the origin speak. The wine is young, firm and still needs time.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Clos Rousseau, together with the Petit Clos Rousseau and Les Fourneaux, forms the 23.83-hectare Clos Rousseau. The site lies on the southern side of Santenay, towards Maranges. The Domaine Thomas Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet farms 13 hectares across seven villages of the Côte de Beaune, spread over 57 parcels.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. The largely destemmed grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank, with malolactic fermentation occurring naturally. The proportion of new oak is around 20 percent. For the red wines, Thomas Morey forgoes fining and filtration. 13.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
On the nose, raspberry, wild strawberry and cherry, alongside liquorice, fine oak, smoke, stone and dark spices. The wine comes across as ripe and juicy, the tannin is firm and still lightly coats the tongue, a sign of its youth. The structure is present and precise, the acidity clear and ripe.
Special features
Sulphur is added only in the final six months in barrel, in several minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l overall. Thomas Morey has run the domaine together with his wife Sylvie since 2007 and converted the estate to organic farming in 2011. The family has been established in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643, with Thomas Morey representing the tenth generation.
