About this wine

Character

A Grenache that brings together power and drive: ripe and beguiling on the nose, silky in flow, yet structured and elegant. Dry, 14.0% vol.

Terroir and origin

Serrat de la Plane means "stony plateau" in Catalan, and that is exactly where the vineyard lies: in the southwest of Roussillon, not far from the Spanish border, on dry, stony weathered gneiss soil. The parcel is permanently exposed to the cool wind. The air movement cools the grapes in the hot climate and preserves freshness. Yields are around 9 hl/ha. Georg Meissner took over this old vineyard when it was due to be grubbed up.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Grenache from ancient vines. After two vintages without filtration or sulphur, Meissner reintroduced both for the 2017, each only very lightly. On the nose, dark berry fruit clearly leads: blackberries with a sweet core and black cherries, joined by undergrowth, garrigue and a touch of pencil shavings.

On the palate

Silky and soft on entry, then the structure takes hold. Fruit and acidity carry the wine juicily, the tannin is firm, the frame powerful and deep. A wine one would be tempted to drink quickly — which would not do justice to how it is made.

Food pairing suggestions

Peking duck. Cod and chickpeas with almonds, pimentón dulce and garlic. Pan-fried Morcilla de Burgos on creamy celery soup.
