About this wine

Character

A Grenache that shows Mediterranean richness and coolness at once: dark, fleshy fruit threaded through with a fresh, subtly austere component. 13.0% vol. and vinified dry.

Terroir and origin

Serrat de la Plane means "stony plateau" in Catalan — the place where the vineyard lies, and the name of the wine. The plot in south-western Roussillon, not far from the Spanish border, stands on dry, stony weathered gneiss soil and is permanently exposed to the cool wind. The airflow cools the grapes in the hot climate and lends them freshness. Yields are around 9 hl/ha.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Grenache from ancient vines. Dr Georg Meissner, a lecturer at Geisenheim University and trainer at respekt-BIODYN, took over two vineyards that would have been grubbed up without his commitment; day-to-day management lies with Flo Busch, with whom he also shares the cellar.

On the palate

On the nose, sweet black cherries, dark plum compote, candied black olives and rosemary, together with liquorice, cedarwood, tobacco and incense; a touch of green pepper sets off its austere freshness. On the tongue, fleshy and juicy, interwoven with precise, pronounced tannin and lively acidity.

Food recommendations

The cuisine may be intense and hearty: lamb tagine with dates and olives, braised beef shank on root vegetables with a red wine and garlic jus, or sheep's cheese with rosemary, dried black olives and tomatoes.

Special features

Meissner is responsible for viticulture, cellar and research at Alois Lageder in South Tyrol and teaches Rudolf Steiner's methods at Geisenheim. His experimental vineyard there compares conventional, organic and biodynamic cultivation. The label carries the Demeter logo.
