About this wine
Character
Wild, primal and profound: that's the impression this Carignan makes in the glass, even before answering the first question about its origin. Deep garnet red with distinct violet hues, and a nose that opens up with oxygen, revealing itself layer by layer.
Terroir and origin
The plot lies in the southwestern Roussillon, not far from the Spanish border, on a terrace amid rocks, old stone walls and adjoining forest. The subsoil consists of weathered gneiss, lending minerality and depth. Georg Meissner took over the vineyard just as it was due to be grubbed up; today he farms it together with Flo Busch.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Carignan from vines dating back to 1899. Yields are around 9 hl/ha. Meissner, a lecturer at Geisenheim University where he oversees an experimental vineyard that allows direct comparison of conventional, organic and biodynamic viticulture, works this plot according to the same biodynamic principles he teaches at respekt-BIODYN.
On the palate
Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, sloe and plum, joined with air by peaty notes, freshly ground black pepper and vanilla, plus floral tones of violet and wild roses. The elegance on the palate is finesse-driven and cool, supported by a moderate alcohol content of 12.5% Vol. A wine from the south of France that is vigorous and pure drinking pleasure.
Food pairings
Grilled aubergines with olive oil, rosemary and thyme, wild boar terrine with green pepper and baguette, or red mullet with beef marrow, red wine sauce and a ragout of fennel, tomato and black olives.
Special features
Vindemiatrix is the name of the star Epsilon Virginis in the constellation Virgo. The Romans awaited its appearance to begin the grape harvest; from this came the Italian vendemmia and the French vendange. The label bears the Demeter logo.
