About this wine
Character
The Terra Vermella 2020 favours clarity over power. 11.5% ABV, taut acidity and a saline, almost chalky edge carry the wine from start to finish. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz belong to the second generation of Priorat, the movement that shifted the focus from concentration and extraction towards freshness, elegance and terroir expression.
Terroir and origin
The vineyards lie on the steep slopes around Porrera, at altitudes of up to 700 metres. The soil is llicorella, the region's black slate. Machinery is no match for these slopes, so Carles Ortiz ploughs with mules, a method no one in Porrera had practised since the 1960s.
Grape variety and vinification
Parellada, an indigenous Catalan variety, stands here as a single varietal, bringing its lively acidity and moderate alcohol to this high-altitude site. Fermentation is spontaneous, ageing takes place in foudres, demi-muids or amphorae, without fining or filtration. The estate has worked biodynamically since its first joint vintage in 2008.
On the palate
The aromatics are finely drawn and precise: green apple, lemon zest, white blossom, a touch of fennel. The acidity runs straight through, the finish remains dry and saline.
Food recommendations
With grilled sardines and calamars a la planxa, as well as with escalivada, roasted vegetables with herbs or an asparagus tortilla.
Special features
Familia Nin Ortiz is one of the few Spanish estates in La Renaissance des Appellations, the association of biodynamic producers founded by Nicolas Joly. Every cork bears the motto "Biodynamic since day one".
