About this wine

Character

A dry Furmint from Tokaj that achieves its impact not through opulent fruit, but through mineral tension. Behind this wine is Roland Velich, who founded the Moric winery in 2001 and works with marked restraint in the cellar. Cool, linear, and precisely structured.

Terroir and Origin

Tokaj is located in northeastern Hungary: volcanic soils composed of rhyolite and loess, a continental climate with long, warm autumns, enhanced by the influence of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. Görbe means crooked or curved in Hungarian and designates the vineyard site from which this wine originates.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Single-varietal Furmint, dry, 13.5% ABV. The grape variety defines Tokaj, and its strength lies in minerality and texture—precisely what this wine focuses on. Velich keeps his interventions minimal so that the origin remains clearly legible in the glass.

On the Palate

The nose opens florally with daisy, acacia and almond blossom, and a hint of orange blossom, followed by subtle green pear, white peach, and cantaloupe melon. Freshly chopped almonds and almond pastry provide nutty depth, while aeration reveals cold smoke, lemongrass, lemon balm, and lemon thyme, rounded off by light sourdough notes and fine saltiness on the finish. The entry is taut and edgy, the medium acidity is seamlessly integrated, and the texture feels stony, saline, almost chalky. The finish carries long, bringing notes of grapefruit, lime zest, and candied ginger.

Special Features

Moric is based in Grosshöflein, Burgenland, where the wine is also bottled. Through the Hidden Treasures project, Roland Velich collaborates with Hungarian winemakers; in 2023, Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year.
