About this wine
Character
The Tokaj Furmint “H” 2024 is a dry white wine from Hungarian Tokaj, released under the Moric label, the estate of Roland Velich. Opulence, drive and substance are set against cool, chalky minerality, and from this interplay the wine draws its dynamic energy. At 14.0% vol., it remains straightforward, with elegance persisting until the very last moment.
Terroir and Origin
Tokaj is located in north-eastern Hungary. Volcanic rhyolite and loess characterise the soils, while the continental climate with long, warm autumns shapes the ripening of the grapes. The “H” in the name stands for the single vineyard Hasznos.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Furmint, vinified varietally and dry, naturally offers high acidity, a dense texture and remarkable ageing potential. Velich works in the cellar with radical restraint so that the vineyard site retains its own distinct voice.
On the Palate
The nose is profound and warm without losing freshness: ripe pear, white peach, cantaloupe melon and yellow apple, accompanied by freshly grated ginger, acacia and orange blossom, white pepper, dried marjoram and lemon thyme. With aeration, lavender and zest of orange and mandarin emerge, alongside almond, freshly cracked macadamia and light brioche. The attack is full-bodied and concentrated, the fruit focused and tight, held in balance by salinity and minerality, with seamlessly integrated acidity. In the long finish, saline and citrus notes become ever more prominent.
Highlights
Roland Velich struck out on his own path with Moric in 2001 and was crowned Winemaker of the Year by Falstaff in 2023. He farms his vineyards in Burgenland biodynamically and collaborates with Hungarian winegrowers under the project title “Hidden Treasures”.
