About this wine

Character

Spécial Club is the house's flagship cuvée. Only vintages that meet the requirements of the grower-champagne association may carry this seal; Vazart-Coquart & Fils has belonged to it since 1996. The 2017 shows the estate's signature style: clarity over opulence, paired with a low dosage in the Extra Brut range that lets the Chardonnay speak for itself.

Terroir and origin

Chouilly is the northernmost Grand Cru of the Côte des Blancs, with chalk soils of great purity. The estate's eleven hectares are spread across 30 parcels over the village's gentle hills; the vines average 44 years of age and root deep into the limestone.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Chardonnay. Jean-Pierre Vazart consistently ages the wine in stainless steel rather than oak, so the terroir speaks rather than the vessel. In the Magnum format, maturation proceeds more slowly and evenly, giving the champagne extra depth.

On the palate

Lemon zest and green apple, followed by hazelnut and brioche. The acidity stays taut, the texture is creamy, and the finish is saline, mineral and long.

Food pairings

Oysters and a platter of seafood, scallops in butter sauce, lobster or turbot. As an aperitif, blinis with caviar, and to finish, aged Comté or Parmesan.

Special features

The estate's home is the red-brick house built by Louis-Victor Coquart in 1865. Today, Jean-Pierre and Caroline Vazart run the house in its third generation. This bottling comes as a 1500ml Magnum, 12.0% vol.
