About this wine
Character
The Spécial Club Rosé Extra Brut 2020 is a Rosé de Saignée made from pure Pinot Noir, produced by Jean-Pierre and Caroline Vazart in Chouilly. The bouquet feels deep and intense, yet retains the lightness of strawberry tart with vanilla cream, alongside cranberry, blood orange, mint and verbena.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in a single parcel named Le Revers du Plumecoq, in Chouilly, the northernmost Grand Cru of the Côte des Blancs. The house, based in a red-brick building from 1865, farms eleven hectares across thirty parcels in the village, with vines averaging 44 years of age.
Grape variety and vinification
The destemmed grapes macerated for two days before pressing. The base wine comes entirely from the 2020 vintage, fermented spontaneously and underwent no malolactic fermentation; it was aged in stainless steel. Tirage took place in May 2021, the bottles matured under cork in the cellar, and disgorgement à la volée was carried out by hand in December 2024 with a dosage of 4 grams.
On the palate
Noticeably drier and more serious than the sensuous nose would suggest. This Champagne shows intensity, tension and power, keeping fruit, minerality, acidity and the 4 grams of dosage in balance. Fine tannins and 13.5% ABV give it body.
Food recommendations
As a Rosé de Saignée, it is intended above all as a food companion and has the body to match: briefly seared duck breast, beef tartare or quail breast on lentils.
Special features
The Spécial Club is a special bottling for the Club Trésors de Champagne, founded in 1971, the oldest growers' association in Champagne; Vazart-Coquart & Fils has been a member since 1996. In 2020, Jean-Pierre Vazart converted to organic viticulture, giving up the Réserve Perpétuelle maintained since 1982.
