About this wine
Character
The Barbaresco DOCG Roncaglie 2020 is a single-varietal Nebbiolo from a single parcel in the commune of Barbaresco. Its fruit sits between red and dark: sour cherry leads, joined by redcurrant, raspberry, plum and blackberry, framed by rosehip and barberry. Earthy beetroot, generous juniper, black pepper, cinnamon and clove add spice, alongside pine cone, pine needles, undergrowth and forest floor. Finally, freshly ground coffee, cigar box and light tobacco leaves.
Terroir and origin
The Roncaglie Masseria vineyard lies in the commune of Barbaresco at 280 metres above sea level, faces southwest, and sits on limestone and clay soil. The vines average 35 years of age. Vietti, based in Castiglione Falletto, has been vinifying individual vineyards separately since 1961, and the Barbaresco Masseria was among the region's first cru wines.
Grape variety and vinification
Nebbiolo, harvested on 29 September, gently pressed and fermented on the skins in steel tank. Including cold maceration, the process takes around a month, with the cap of skins punched down continuously. Malolactic fermentation already takes place in oak barrel. Ageing lasts almost 30 months, mostly in large oak barrels, complemented by barrique.
On the palate
The first sip flows calmly, carried by generous fruit. Beneath it, mineral depth, the finest tannin and a delicate acid structure work in balance. Plenty of substance, plenty of length, and a finish shaped by the wine's entire aromatic profile.
Food pairing suggestions
Roast saddle of venison with pickled cherries and celery-carrot vegetables, grilled presa ibérica with orange and fennel, or red wine risotto with roasted hazelnuts and pecorino.
Special features
The wine is bottled without any filtration, with maturation continuing in bottle, here in magnum format at 1500 ml and 14.5% vol. Vietti has existed since 1873, and since 1974 its bottles have featured original artworks by artists.
