About this wine

Character

In few wines is Artadi's signature as clearly legible as in the Viña El Pisón: precise rather than pompous, elegant rather than exhausting. Black cherry, violet and a chalky streak carry a Tempranillo that places finesse over power and ages for decades without ever closing down in its youth.

Terroir and origin

The plot lies at 480 metres of altitude in Rioja Alavesa, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria: an amphitheatre of limestone and chalk. The region's calcareous, clay-rich soils give the wine its taut minerality and the cool clarity that carries it through the years.

Grape variety and winemaking

Pure Tempranillo from vines planted in 1945. The vineyard is farmed organically, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals, with some of the work done by horse. In the cellar, the wine ferments in open vessels that allow for gentle extraction; ageing takes place in French oak, which lends structure without masking the fruit. 14.5% vol., dry.

On the palate

Concentrated yet finely structured. The tannin is finely polished, the freshness keeps the wine upright, and the finish remains chalky and mineral for a long time. Ripe blackberry and black cherry sit alongside fine herbal spice and a subtle note of French oak.

Food pairings

With roasted rack of lamb with rosemary, saddle of venison in dark jus or aged beef fillet. Equally good with grilled duck breast, mushroom risotto with Parmigiano and aged Manchego.

Highlights

At the end of 2015, Artadi left the DOCa Rioja because its regulations prohibited naming individual vineyards on the back label. Winemaking still takes place in Laguardia, in the same cellar as for the past forty years. Juan Carlos López de Lacalle today runs nine single vineyards together with his children Carlos and Patricia.
