About this wine
Character
A red wine of cool cut: dark fruit, fine spice, a taut trajectory. Artadi crafts it in Laguardia, where Juan Carlos López de Lacalle has worked since 1985 and ranks the parcel above the traditional classification.
Terroir and origin
The Viñas de Gain Tinto is a village wine that draws together some of the finest sites in the vineyards of Laguardia: San Martín, Las Ventas, Castejones, Ribaltayo, Viejo. They lie between 450 and 700 metres above sea level. Clay defines the topsoil, resting on a limestone base below.
Grape variety and vinification
Tempranillo, hand-harvested into 10-kilo crates. After a 48-hour cold maceration, the grapes fermented spontaneously over twelve days in large stainless-steel tanks. Ageing lasted twelve months in French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation also took place. The vines grow without herbicides or synthetic chemicals.
On the palate
The nose is both dark and cool: morello cherry, black cherry and blackberry lead, elderflower and rosehip tea follow, while black pepper and licorice add spice in counterpoint. On the palate, the rich fruit is wrapped in silk, with acidity and a cool mouthfeel keeping it taut and juicy. The 14.5% ABV stays discreetly in the background.
Food pairings
Grilled T-bone steak with green beans and rosemary potatoes, herb-crusted rack of lamb with artichoke bottoms and red lentil salad, or ratatouille with coconut flakes and basmati rice.
Special features
Since the 2015 vintage, the word Rioja no longer appears on the label: Artadi considered the Consejo Regulador's quality standards too lenient and has since released its wines as table wines. Bottled in the 1.5-litre Magnum format.
