About this wine
Character
A taut, coolly drawn Tempranillo from Laguardia. Juan Carlos López de Lacalle favours gentle extraction and finesse over power, and the wine shows exactly that: clear red fruit, fine spice, a tannin that carries rather than pads. In magnum format it ages more slowly than in a standard bottle.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the Rioja Alavesa, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria. The chalky, clay-rich soils give the wine its cool line and the acidity that keeps it fresh. At the end of 2015 Artadi left the DOCa Rioja, whose regulations recognised only ageing categories such as Crianza and Reserva and prohibited the naming of individual vineyards. Vinification still takes place in the cellar in Laguardia.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Tempranillo from organically farmed vineyards, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals; part of the soil is worked with a horse. Fermentation takes place in open vats, ageing in French barriques that lend structure without dominating. The estate does without micro-oxygenation and reverse osmosis.
On the palate
Silky and focused at once: fresh plum and dense red berry fruit, with fine spice and a cool limestone note on the finish. The tannin is supple, the acidity lively, the wine dry at 14.5% ABV.
Food pairing recommendations
With lamb chop, tender beef fillet or braised ox cheek. Equally good with aged Manchego or a hearty mushroom risotto.
Special features
The 1500ml magnum lets the wine age more slowly and with greater complexity. The label bears the name Viñas de Gain, not the designation of an ageing category.
