About this wine

Character

A cool, taut red wine with wild, honest fruit. On the nose, blackberry, mulberry and blackcurrant, alongside rosemary and juniper. Beneath lie wild sage and black olives; notes of graphite and charcoal lend finesse and complexity.

Terroir and origin

The vineyards lie in southwestern Roussillon, not far from the Spanish border. The parcel stretches across a terrace sheltered by rocks, old stone walls and adjoining woodland. Beneath the surface lies weathered gneiss, which lends minerality and depth.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Carignan from vines planted in 1899, now over a hundred years old. Georg Meissner took over the two small vineyards, which would otherwise have been uprooted, and farms them biodynamically together with Flo Busch. He produces the Vindemiatrix only in exceptional years, in tiny quantities.

On the palate

The freshness and finesse of Carignan, carried by firm structure and cool elegance. The juicy flow and low alcohol content of 12.5% Vol. make this wine an excellent companion to food, best enjoyed with dishes from its home region.

Food pairings

Grilled bread with black olive tapenade, lamb chops with rosemary, green beans and tomato concassée, or roasted octopus on an artichoke and fennel ragout.

Special features

Vindemiatrix is the name of a star in the constellation Virgo; the Romans waited for its appearance in the sky before beginning the grape harvest, hence the French word vendange. Georg Meissner teaches Rudolf Steiner's methods at Geisenheim University. The label carries the Demeter logo.
