About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir of clarity and cool precision. The nose is led by sour cherry and morello cherry, alongside wild raspberry, redcurrant and a hint of strawberry. Beneath lie undergrowth and damp earth, a balsamic, resinous note, together with juniper, liquorice and a touch of black pepper, herbs ranging from thyme and rosemary to lovage, finishing with lightly roasted coffee.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from the Premier Cru vineyard Gigotte in Volnay. Domaine Darviot-Perrin is based in Monthélie, where the family has farmed its plots since the 19th century. Eleven hectares in the Côte de Beaune are spread across Monthélie, Volnay, Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet, including seven Premier Cru vineyards.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir, vinified dry at 13.5% vol. Pierre-Antonin Darviot ferments with up to 100% whole clusters; the stems contribute floral notes and silky tannins. The Gigotte matures in used barrels with a maximum of 25% new oak. No fining, no filtration, and only minimal sulphur is used.

On the palate

The fruit builds with concentration without ever becoming broad; sour cherry and morello cherry carry through here as well. The acidity arrives early, lending tension and contour, while a silky, mineral texture makes the wine feel almost weightless. Woodland and herbal notes linger as an undertone. The finish narrows to juicy, tart cherry, with spice and the crisp association of sourdough bread crust.

Distinctive features

Pierre-Antonin Darviot studied oenology in Beaune, worked in the Loire and in New Zealand, and returned to Monthélie in 2017. In 2019, at the age of 25, he took over as tenth-generation head of the estate following the death of his father Jacques, and consistently converted the domaine to biodynamic farming.
