About this wine

Character

A Riesling from the Wachau with 12.0% ABV, built on clarity rather than weight. After years in the cellar, the fruit has shifted toward ripe apricot and dried citrus fruit, with the acidity still carrying the wine effortlessly.

Terroir and Origin

Nikolaihof cultivates 22 hectares in the Wachau on stone terraces, where wild herbs thrive and green lizards live among the vines. The estate stands on the foundations of the Roman fort Favianis dating back to 63 BC; the Im Weingebirge vineyard is considered the earliest documented vineyard in Europe, recorded as far back as 470 AD.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Single-varietal Riesling, produced biodynamically according to Demeter standards. The musts ferment spontaneously and mature in large Slavonian oak casks, sometimes for a decade or longer; a 350-year-old wooden beam press made of oak operates in the Roman vaulted cellar. The 2008 vintage was bottled only in December 2015 and released as an Archive Release in 2024.

On the Palate

Lean body, clearly defined acidity as the backbone, accompanied by peach and lime over a fine salinity. Nuances of beeswax, wet pebble, and a touch of white pepper follow behind. The finish remains long and cool.

Special Features

Nikolaihof is the oldest winery in Austria and has farmed biodynamically since 1971, as the country's first Demeter-certified winery and to this day the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau; it is also regarded as the oldest Demeter winery in the world. The Saahs family has run the estate since 1894, with Nikolaus Saahs Jr. responsible for the winemaking today.
