About this wine
Character
The Vosne-Romanée rouge AOC 2023 is a Pinot Noir that places its limestone minerality ahead of the fruit. In the glass, deep cherry red with distinct violet reflections. The nose opens with deep limestone depth, and only after aeration do morello cherry, wild berries, forest floor, juniper, cinnamon and leather emerge.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the climat Les Ormes, also known as Aux Ormes, directly along the D974 in Vosne-Romanée. Charlopin Tissier farms 0.16 hectares there on limestone clay, which gives the wine its cool, taut core.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir. The grapes are destemmed, cold-soaked and fermented spontaneously. The wine then ages slowly on fine lees, 18 months in 228-litre barriques, mainly from François Frères, with a new-oak share of 50 to 75 percent. Vinified dry, 13.5 percent alcohol by volume.
On the palate
Juicy yet lean. Acidity and tannin are polished and well integrated, and the long finish carries extract sweetness with a saline trace. A wine that invigorates the senses.
Food pairing recommendations
With pink-roasted duck breast, saddle of venison, braised pheasant, boeuf bourguignon and mushroom dishes.
Special features
Yann Charlopin trained in the cellar of his father Philippe Charlopin, whose mentor was Henri Jayer, and subsequently with Jean-Marie Fourrier. In 2013 he founded his own estate in Morey-Saint-Denis together with Justine Tissier, now just over four hectares in the Côte de Nuits. The work is organic and by hand, with spontaneous fermentation and slow ageing on fine lees. The wines appear on the lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie.
