About this wine
Character
A Syrah that combines density with coolness: dark-woven, underpinned by stoniness, built with slender elegance at 12.5% Vol. Still closed in its youth, it deserves generous aeration in a decanter — or a few years' rest in the cellar.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow in Saint Joseph in the northern Rhône, on granite and at an altitude of 350 metres, which gives the wine its name. David Reynaud took over Domaine Les Bruyères in 2002, converted to organic farming a year later, and in 2005 had the biodynamic cultivation certified by Biodyvin. The move into Saint Joseph extends the estate beyond its core territory.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Syrah. Fermented in concrete tank, matured 50% in half-barrels of oak and 50% in concrete. The wine was bottled on 17.11.2021.
On the palate
After contact with air, an intense bouquet unfolds of beetroot, cassis, dark plum compote, dried plum, cranberry compote and candied olives, framed by tar, liquorice, fine dark chocolate and freshly brewed coffee. On the palate this fruit continues charmingly with a delicate sweetness, carried by a mature tannin and acid structure that still feels youthful. Stony, saline notes coat the palate and linger.
Food pairing recommendations
Beetroot baked in a salt crust with olive oil and rosemary, duck liver wrapped in pumpernickel with pickled berries, or grilled rib of beef with porcini potato gratin and truffle jus.
Special features
Reynaud works the soils with a horse-drawn plough, destems, presses in a basket press and ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts; the underground cellar operates on the gravity-flow principle. Behind this lie 27 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards.
