About this wine
Character
A Syrah in classic northern Rhône style: less opulent, a moderate 12.5% Vol., with a nose full of charm, sweetness and cool finesse, showing sweet blackberries and morello cherries.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow in Crozes-Hermitage in the northern Rhône, on the Châssis plateau with its clay-limestone terraces. The galets, round pebbles from former riverbeds, store heat during the day and release it to the vines at night. This blend of clay, sand and stone shapes the character of the wines. David Reynaud farms 27 hectares biodynamically, with 87% of the land planted to Syrah.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Syrah from old vines. Selection begins in the vineyard, where the soils are worked with a horse-drawn plough. In the cellar, this is followed by destemming, traditional basket-press pressing and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; vinification takes place in 16-hectolitre concrete eggs and traditional concrete tanks. The underground cellar operates on the gravity-flow principle.
On the palate
Two days open suit this wine beautifully: it then flows like velvet and silk across the tongue while retaining precise minerality and lively acidity. The finish carries notes of fruit tea, orange zest and gingerbread spice. With exposure to air, the nose also reveals boxwood, ivy and lavender, along with distinct rosemary, thyme and juniper, over a base of caramelised beetroot, fresh cranberries, pencil lead and cool stone.
Special features
David Reynaud took over Domaine Les Bruyères in 2002 at the age of 28, converted to organic farming a year later, and has worked biodynamically since 2005. The estate now ranks among the five best in Crozes-Hermitage, with Reynaud himself regarded as the "prince of Syrah".
