About this wine
Character
A densely woven Syrah that needs oxygen: only after some time in the glass does its dark aromatic profile of beetroot, cassis, dark plum compote, dried plum, cranberry compote and candied olives open up. It is framed by tar, liquorice, fine bitter chocolate and freshly brewed coffee. Abundant stony minerality lends structure and depth, while 13.0% vol. keeps the wine dry and lean.
Terroir and origin
The best sites of Crozes-Hermitage lie on the granite soils and gravel deposits near Gervans and Larnage. There, Les Bruyères cultivates old Syrah vines. David Reynaud took over the estate in 2002 and converted it to organic farming a year later; today the estate comprises 27 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards, whose soils he works with a horse-drawn plough.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Syrah. Destemming, traditional basket pressing and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts are standard practice at the estate, whose underground cellar operates on the gravity principle. Vinification takes place in concrete, partly in 16-hectolitre concrete eggs. The wine then ages for 12 months in used barriques, 10 months in concrete and a further 10 months in bottle.
On the palate
Dense and interwoven, the fruit from the nose returns charmingly with a gentle sweetness. The tannin and acid structure are ripe yet still seem youthful, while stony, saline notes coat the palate. Very good ageing potential.
Food pairing recommendations
This wine pairs beautifully with robust, richly flavoured dishes from southern climes.
Special features
