About this wine
Character
A dry Grosses Gewächs that draws its impact from restraint. Fine, pure, understated, with a balance of fruit, spice and gripping extract that will carry this wine for decades. Still young and evolving.
Terroir and origin
The Frauenberg lies in the southern Wonnegau, north of Hohen-Sülzen toward Flörsheim, at altitudes up to 280 meters and with slopes as steep as 40%. Limestone gravel over pure limestone bedrock forces the vines deep into the rock in search of minerals; the exposed site demands they withstand both heat and cool wind. As early as 1290 the vineyard appears as "an frauwenhalten," then owned by a convent of nuns.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, hand-harvested, strictly selected, spontaneously fermented and aged in large and double-large oak casks. Battenfeld-Spanier has farmed biodynamically since 2005, using preparations 500 and 501 and working with the rhythm of the moon phases; in the cellar, minimal sulfur and no fining agents. 12.5% ABV.
On the palate
On the nose, creaminess and a subtly smoky note, alongside lemon, lemon balm and lemongrass. On the palate, a subtle extract sweetness in yellow- and white-fleshed fruit, mineral spice in the background, piquant herbal notes and a tannin that feels as polished as a semi-precious stone.
Food pairings
Smoked salmon in puff pastry with fried kale, lukewarm char on smoked mashed potatoes with tarragon butter or guinea fowl with chickpeas, chorizo, Espelette pepper and almonds.
Special features
The 1500 ml magnum format gives this long-lived Riesling extra time in the cellar. Battenfeld-Spanier is a VDP estate cultivating the limestone soils of the Wonnegau, which lend Riesling a taut, cool texture.
