About this wine
Character
A Riesling that draws its power from structure rather than fruit: taut, cool, saline, with vibrant acidity and a finish echoing lemon peel and wet stone. The 12.5% ABV keeps it lean without losing density.
Terroir and origin
The Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott vineyard lies in the Zellertal, where Battenfeld-Spanier works limestone soils, as it also does in the Wonnegau. Limestone gives the Riesling a taut, cool texture and saline precision; in this vineyard the estate pushes this style to its furthest expression. A terroir built on structure rather than opulence.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2005: preparations 500 and 501 are used regularly, and lunar phases set the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulfur, no fining agents. Guidance rather than correction.
On the palate
Pale straw yellow with greenish highlights. On the nose, white peach, lemon zest and green apple, along with fresh herbs, a hint of flint and chalky spice. The palate entry is linear, the acidity carries the wine, and the dry finish leaves a long trace of saline limestone.
Food pairings
Pan-fried turbot with lemon butter or celeriac purée, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, smoked trout with horseradish. It also pairs beautifully with Japanese cuisine, such as sashimi or steamed dumplings.
Highlights
A Grand Cru from a VDP estate, vinified dry. Young, it shows its tension; three to five years in bottle add complexity.
