About this wine
Character
The Duemani Costa Toscana IGP 2019 is a single-varietal Cabernet Franc from Riparbella, biodynamically produced and bottled here in Magnum format. Deep and honest, both spicy and fruity, dry, with 14.0% vol.
Terroir and origin
Elena Celli and Luca D'Attoma, one of Italy's most celebrated oenologists, founded Duemani in 2000 near Riparbella. The grapes come from the best plots at 220 to 250 metres above sea level, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea; the vines are 17 years old. The soils are calcareous, rich in clay and stones. Twelve hectares, Demeter-certified since 2004.
Grape variety and vinification
Hand-harvested in late September with a first selection in the vineyard and a second at the sorting table. Destemming is done gently to keep the berry skins intact. Spontaneous fermentation in temperature-controlled conical oak vats, 30 days of maceration with short, regular pump-overs. This is followed by 22 months in small French oak barrels of 225 to 228 litres, 80 percent new, 20 percent second-fill. Bottled unfiltered.
On the palate
Compact and densely woven, tightly knit and still slightly veiled. The fruit pushes forward powerfully, the acidity arrives promptly, the tannin appears ripe, elegant and silky-smooth. Tomato and beetroot add depth, the herbal spice recedes, leaving dark chocolate and coffee on the finish. On the nose beforehand, cinnamon plum, damson and mulberry, along with fig, hibiscus, violet, cedarwood, warm leather and a hint of eucalyptus.
Food pairings
Saddle of venison with a nut crust, romanesco and pan-fried potato dumplings, duck breast cooked pink with hoisin sauce, pak choi and braised plum or crispy fried eggplant with garlic, mint and black olives.
Special features
The Demeter logo appears on the label. Duemani produces 45,000 bottles a year; since 2023 the estate has been part of Le Tenute del Leone Alato, with Luca D'Attoma remaining connected to the winery as a consultant.
