About this wine

Character

The LIL' KRA XXIII Komet Rosso IGT 2023 is a Pinot Noir from Eppan in South Tyrol that doesn't seek its impact through power: light garnet red with violet highlights, a delicate structure, and a strikingly low 11.5% vol. The fruit takes elegant centre stage, while the tannin is polished and velvety.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from a top Pinot Noir site in Eppan that was newly planted in 2020 and is destined to become part of the Krafuss in future. Alois Lageder in Margreid, family-owned since 1823, converted its own vineyards to biodynamic farming in 2004; meadows bloom between the vine rows as part of the estate's cycle.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir, and specifically 20 different variants: clones and massal selections on various rootstocks, harvested for the first time in 2023 in a small quantity. Fermentation lasted seven days in large wood, without whole clusters, after which the wine aged for 16 months in a large wooden cask.

On the palate

Fresh and captivating on the nose, with sour cherry, Josta berry, blueberry and cassis, alongside fine notes of graphite and herbs. On the palate it is light-footed and fruity, the acidity ripe and invigorating, the tannin velvety. A red wine from South Tyrol, reimagined here.

Food pairing recommendations

Lightly chilled with spicy dishes.

Highlights

The wine belongs to the experimental Komet line, through which sixth-generation winemaker Clemens Lageder questions conventional winemaking dogma; instead of a vintage year, the label carries the Roman numeral XXIII, which also notes the biodynamic farming. Since 2024, all of the estate's roughly 60 contracted growers have also been working organically or biodynamically.
