About this wine
Character
A Chardonnay that draws its density not from alcohol: 9.5% by volume, dry, yet with real length. Here, freshness carries everything, the fruit stays clearly defined, and the spice remains in the background. This is South Tyrolean Chardonnay reimagined.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the top sites of a partner grower, in old pergola vineyards on a dolomite scree cone. These sites could in future be considered for the LÖWENGANG selection. The winery itself is based in Margreid, in the southernmost part of South Tyrol, where Mediterranean warmth meets alpine coolness.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Chardonnay, harvested as early as 17 August. Around 20 percent of the grapes underwent whole-cluster fermentation for a week, while the directly pressed portion macerated overnight on the skins. After racking, the whole-cluster fraction was pressed and the press wine blended back in. The wine then aged for 16 months in tonneau on coarse lees and was bottled unfiltered in January 2025.
On the palate
Radiant golden yellow in the glass. On the nose, mandarin, lemon, lemon thyme, lemongrass and ginger, joined by almond and salted butter, all finely interwoven. The wine stays agile, led by a fine acid structure, with delicate spice lingering on the finish.
Food pairings
With char ceviche, seafood risotto or lemon chicken, as well as light fish dishes and Asian-spiced fare featuring lemongrass and ginger.
Special features
Clemens Lageder's Komet line carries Roman numerals instead of classic vintage years and challenges conventional winemaking dogmas. The label states biodynamic cultivation; since 2024, all around 60 of the estate's contract growers have farmed organically or biodynamically.
