About this wine
Character
A purist Riesling that draws its effect from tension rather than fruit richness. At 12.5% ABV it remains lean, the structure is taut, the finish saline.
Terroir and origin
The Zell Kreuzberg vineyard site lies in the Zellertal, where Battenfeld-Spanier works on limestone. This soil gives the Riesling a cool, taut texture and saline precision. It is the signature style Hans Oliver Spanier pursues in the Wonnegau and the Zellertal: austerity as a stylistic device, clarity before opulence.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Riesling. Biodynamic farming since 2005, with preparations 500 and 501 used regularly, and lunar phases guiding the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden foudre, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents. The cellar accompanies, it does not correct.
On the palate
First green apple and lemon zest, along with fresh herbs and a stony, cool note. The wine remains lean and firm, the acidity carries without being sharp, a saline edge runs through the long, finely fading finish.
Food pairing recommendations
A wine for iodine-driven, clearly seasoned cuisine: scallops, also as scallop sashimi, pan-fried pike-perch with lemon butter, turbot, or trout meunière. It also sets clear accents alongside mild sheep's cheese with fresh herbs, as well as with delicate veal medallions.
Special features
Battenfeld-Spanier is a VDP estate and has worked consistently biodynamically since 2005. The Zell Kreuzberg is vinified dry and reflects the limestone-marked part of the estate, not its Rotliegend soils.
