About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling that draws its effect from tension and salinity rather than fruit sweetness. At 12.5% vol. it stays lean; acidity and mineral length carry its tension. Hans Oliver Spanier's signature is clearly legible here: cool, clear, understated.

Terroir and origin

The Zell Kreuzberg vineyard lies in the Zellertal, the cool transition zone between Rheinhessen and the Palatinate. Battenfeld-Spanier works limestone soils here that give the Riesling a taut, cool texture with saline precision. The wine thus remains firmly tied to its origin.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Riesling. The estate has worked biodynamically since 2005, using preparations 500 and 501 and aligning vineyard work with the phases of the moon. Ageing follows the principle of accompaniment rather than correction: spontaneous fermentation in large oak foudres and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents.

On the palate

Pale yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose, lemon zest, green apple and a trace of damp limestone. The palate opens cool and slender, underpinned by a saline minerality that carries the wine through to a long, dry finish.

Food pairing

Pairs with pan-fried pikeperch on lentil vegetables, turbot with Noilly Prat foam and shellfish risotto. With veal carpaccio or chilled veal tartare, the acidity sets a clear counterpoint.

Special features

Battenfeld-Spanier and Kühling-Gillot are two VDP estates united under one biodynamic philosophy. While the Rotliegend sets the tone on the Roter Hang, this wine represents the estate's limestone side in the Wonnegau and Zellertal.
